My recipe — a place to begin.
Mi receta — un lugar por donde empezar.
There is no single way to prepare cacao. This is mine — shared the way a family recipe is shared: with measurements to guide you, and enough room to make it your own.
For an intentional moment
Para un momento con intención
For a pause, meditation, writing, creativity, breath — or simply a moment with yourself.
For a deeper cacao experience
Para una experiencia más profunda con cacao
A fuller serving for when you want to create a longer, more intentional space with cacao.
Start with approx. 200 ml (¾–1 cup) of liquid. For a smaller, thicker preparation: 100–120 ml (⅓–½ cup).
Start with approx. 250–300 ml (1–1¼ cups). For a more concentrated preparation: 180–200 ml (about ¾ cup).
Empieza con aprox. 250–300 ml (1–1¼ tazas).
Start with the water
Empieza por el agua
Heat the water until it boils. Then add the herbs or spices you want to use and let them infuse for a few minutes: cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, vanilla, chile — or another plant that accompanies your intention.
If you use piloncillo or another sweetener that needs to dissolve, this is a good moment to add it.
I like to stay near the pot here, noticing how the aroma slowly fills the kitchen. Without planning it, this is often where my own pause begins.
Lower the heat
Baja el fuego
After the infusion, lower the heat to medium-low. Before adding cacao, the liquid should no longer be actively boiling or bubbling.
Add the cacao
Agrega el cacao
You can add the disc whole — it is small enough to dissolve in the hot liquid — or chop it slowly first.
Sometimes I chop it simply as a first chance to pause: to feel its weight and texture in my hands before letting it go into the pot.
Stir gently
Revuelve despacio
Add the cacao to the hot liquid and stir gently until it becomes fully integrated.
While it melts, watch the movement in the cup. The spirals are part of what gave Inspiral its name.

This is where Inspiral begins.
De ahí nace Inspiral.
For me, preparing cacao is already part of the ceremony: while I chop it, while the water and plants infuse, while it melts and especially while I watch it turn.
Make it taste like yours.
Haz que sepa a ti.
Once the cacao is dissolved, add plant milk if you like and keep mixing gently over low heat. Try not to bring it back to a boil.
Taste it. Adjust the sweetness and texture. I often use honey, agave or piloncillo; monk fruit or natural stevia also work if you prefer no added sugar.

You don't need to do it the way I do.
No necesitas hacerlo como yo.
Maybe you want to sing to it. Speak. Give thanks. Breathe. Stay in silence. Or simply watch what has been changing slowly in front of you.
Tal vez tú quieras cantarle. Hablarle. Agradecerle. Respirar.

- Bring your attention to your body and remember the intention you planted while preparing it.
No need to do it perfectly. No need to know what should happen.
Sin necesidad de hacerlo perfecto. Sin necesidad de saber qué debería suceder.
Just be present for whatever this moment wants to show you.
Maybe the ceremony doesn't begin when you drink the cacao. Maybe it has already begun.
The cacao in your hands has a place, a path and a story.
Lot 001 begins in Izabal, Guatemala, in a cacao system I chose not only for what arrives in the cup, but for the relationships behind it: a recovering forest, organic cultivation, cacao diversity, careful work at origin and a community-powered model.

A cacao chosen for the whole story it carries.

For Inspiral, the word “ceremonial” is not enough. I want to know what kind of land the cacao comes from, who makes its cultivation possible, how it is cared for after harvest, and what relationships our cup helps sustain.

From pasture back toward forest
De pastizal de vuelta hacia bosque
Kampura began by restoring degraded cattle pasture in Izabal. Its current agroforestry system layers cacao beneath a diverse canopy and uses natural succession and returned biomass to rebuild soil, biodiversity and resilience.
Community-powered cacao
Cacao sostenido por la comunidad
Kampura describes its work as a partnership with neighboring Qʼeqchiʼ Maya communities. Its published model includes living-income jobs, benefits, technical training and local leadership — keeping skills and more of the value of cacao in the region.

Care after harvest
Cuidado después de la cosecha
Kampura keeps post-harvest work in Guatemala and operates an on-site quality laboratory. For Lot 001, Inspiral received the cacao as roasted and winnowed nibs, then ground them into 100% cacao paste and molded every 21 g disc.

I do not believe a marketing label alone makes cacao ceremonial. For Inspiral, choosing cacao for meaningful moments also means looking at origin, ecology, people, process and the care we bring when we prepare it.
Perhaps what makes a cacao worthy of ceremony is not only what is in the cup — but the relationships that made the cup possible.
My path with cacao.

México, memoria y ritual cotidiano.
I grew up in Mexico, where cacao appears in celebrations and everyday traditions — hot chocolate, Día de Muertos, posadas, and regional drinks where cacao meets maize, chile, seeds and spices. Long before I called it ceremonial, cacao was already part of a cultural landscape I knew.

Biology changed the question.
La biología cambió la pregunta.
As a biologist and during my postgraduate studies in Tropical Ecology at CITRO, Universidad Veracruzana, I learned to look at plants inside the ecological, cultural and human relationships built around them. Dr. Nisao Ogata Aguilar's work with cacao, ethnobotany and biocultural diversity became one of the references that sharpened that way of seeing.

Huitzi
I worked alongside Huitzi at his temazcal for seven years, and although I now live far away, we still collaborate from a distance. Through that sustained relationship I encountered cacao inside temazcal and other ceremonial contexts, and learned from the way he understands its place within those practices: as something that can awaken the senses, offer energy, open the heart and accompany meaningful moments and processes.

María Cacho
I learned with María during a nine-month initiation into rites of passage at Alumbra Ritos de Paso. Through that process, she taught me to understand cacao as a companion and catalyst within ritual — something that can help open emotion, empathy and presence during moments of transition, and that is served with care for the person and the process receiving it.

Not reproducing an imagined ancient ceremony.
No reproducir una ceremonia antigua imaginada.
My research led me to a distinction that made the relationship more honest for me: cacao's ritual use is ancestral; the independent therapeutic “cacao ceremony” format common today is much more recent. That doesn't make contemporary ceremony meaningless. It asks us to be precise about what we inherited, what we learned, and what we are creating.

Temazcal Coatlicue was my temazcal in Mexico. Its brick structure stayed behind, but we carry with us what was planted in its navel — and the energy of everything lived there — as our temazcal becomes nomadic until we find the place where it can take root again.
A companion to meaningful moments.
Un acompañante para momentos significativos.

Cacao has long accompanied ceremony.
In documented Mesoamerican contexts, cacao appears within rites, offerings, alliances and moments of transition — not always as the ceremony itself, but as a meaningful part of it. Through the teachings I have received, I have learned to work with cacao as a companion — and at times a catalyst — whose flavor, aroma, nourishment and felt qualities can help us pause, connect and give shape to a process.
That is why, in my own work, I prefer to create ceremonies with cacao: spaces where cacao accompanies an intention, a transition or a moment of connection, rather than asking cacao itself to carry the whole meaning of the ceremony.
Inspiral Cacao grew from that intersection: culture, biology, teachers, research, ritual and my own practice.
Inspiral Cacao nació de esa intersección: cultura, biología, maestros, investigación, rito y mi propia práctica.
